Want instant results? Try Google Ads or ChatGPT Ads
SEO and GEO are medium and long-term investments. If you need fast results, advertising is the right complement while your foundations are built. Two options: Google Ads and advertising inside ChatGPT.
Why advertise in an AI engine like ChatGPT?
- ✓Take part in the future of advertising designed for AI: reach customers in an environment built around conversation, context and real-time decisions.
- ✓Go beyond keywords with richer contextual signals: in ChatGPT, people share a lot of context, which allows more relevant and more useful advertising.
- ✓Be there when people compare: they explore options, weigh possibilities and make informed decisions, mid-conversation.
The format, context-hint targeting and pricing are detailed in our article How to advertise on ChatGPT and on the ChatGPT advertising page. Check availability for your country before building a budget.
Where do you start this week? A 10-step action plan
No need to do everything at once. Here is the order we recommend, from quickest to longest.
- ✓Test your current visibility. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity: "Which company should I choose for [your service] in [your city]?" Note who is cited, and why.
- ✓Run your site through PageSpeed Insights and note your agentic browsing score and your speed.
- ✓Check your robots.txt and publish an llms.txt file.
- ✓Complete your Google profile: services, categories, photos, posts.
- ✓Open Google Search Console and spot the queries that already generate impressions.
- ✓Rewrite your headings as questions and your service pages in natural language.
- ✓Add an FAQ and Schema.org markup to your important pages.
- ✓Publish a complete guide or comparison (800 words or more), with sources and original data.
- ✓Ask your customers for reviews and aim for three external sources (a directory, an association, a media outlet) to earn a mention or a backlink.
- ✓Update your content regularly and repeat the first step's test every month to track your progress.
30-day plan: the foundations
The first month lays the groundwork and mostly costs time.
- ✓Week 1: run the five-question test in the AIs and run your site through PageSpeed Insights.
- ✓Week 2: fix robots.txt, publish llms.txt and complete your Google profile.
- ✓Week 3: add Schema.org markup and an FAQ to your main pages.
- ✓Week 4: ask five customers for reviews and rewrite your headings as questions.
Days 31 to 60: the content
The second month produces the content that will be cited.
- ✓Publish a complete guide or comparison (800 words or more) on your main topic.
- ✓Add one piece of original data with its method and date.
- ✓Update your three most important pages.
- ✓Create a dedicated page for every service that lacks one.
How do you measure your GEO results every month?
Every month, ask the same five questions in the same AIs and note the results in a spreadsheet. Complete with Google Search Console (impressions and clicks) and, if you have one, a paid SEO tool (about $150 a month) to track your backlinks and DR. This sample table is enough to start:
To track these indicators without a spreadsheet, GEO Monitor measures your visibility in AI and gives you a monthly report with an action plan.
| Date | Question asked | AI | Cited? | Sources cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sept 20 | Which company should I choose for [service] in [city]? | ChatGPT | No | Competitor A, directory B |
| Sept 20 | Which company should I choose for [service] in [city]? | Perplexity | No | Competitor A, media C |
| Oct 20 | Which company should I choose for [service] in [city]? | ChatGPT | To note | To note |
Fictional example: replace it with your own data.
Key takeaways from chapter 10
- 1A 90-day plan: foundations, content, authority.
- 2Advertising can give immediate visibility while the foundations are built.
- 3Measure every month with the same questions.
- 4Track AI traffic in Analytics, and fix at the source what an AI gets wrong.
How do you spot traffic coming from AI in Google Analytics?
In Google Analytics 4, open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, then pick the "Session source" dimension. Look for these sources: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Create a segment or filter with these names, and check visits, conversions and landing pages each month.
Note: some visits from an AI do not report their origin and land in "Direct". The real figure is therefore a bit higher than what you see. Add a simple question to your forms: "How did you hear about us?", with an option "ChatGPT or another AI".
What should you do when an AI says something false about your business?
It happens often: a wrong price, outdated hours, a service you no longer offer. An AI does not correct itself on request; you have to fix what it reads.
1) Find the source: ask the AI (Perplexity and ChatGPT in search mode show their sources) where the information came from.
2) Fix it at the source: your site, your Google profile, a directory or an article. Update the page date.
3) Add a clear page: a direct answer ("What does ... cost?") with the exact information, at the top of the page.
4) Test again in a few weeks: corrections are not instant. Note the result in your chapter 1 table.
Write the three actions you will take this week, with a date for each. Then take the final exam to earn your GEO certification.
