OpenAI has opened advertising inside ChatGPT. We're among the first agencies in Quebec preparing and running these campaigns, from strategy through optimization.

The order of magnitude
Figures from OpenAI's official communications and from the Agence France-Presse dispatch carried by La Presse on February 10, 2026, current as of August 16, 2026. OpenAI doesn't publish province-level data: we won't invent a Quebec number for you.
Where things actually stand
OpenAI began testing advertising in ChatGPT on February 9, 2026, with adult users on the Free and Go plans in the United States, and is expanding gradually. Advertiser availability still varies by country.
So we're not selling you a campaign that launches everywhere tomorrow morning. We get you ready: account created, strategy written, creative prepared, context hints defined. The day the network opens for you, you're running while your competitors start reading the documentation.
The trajectory is worth recalling. Radio-Canada reported in February 2023 that ChatGPT had passed 100 million monthly active users two months after launch, which UBS described at the time as the fastest ramp-up ever seen for a consumer web application. TikTok took nine months, Instagram two and a half years. Three years later, the same platform is opening its advertising inventory.
We check country availability weekly and will tell you plainly if it isn't open for your market yet.
Why now
It's the most consistent rule in online advertising. Google AdWords in 2003, Facebook in 2008, TikTok in 2019: in every case, those who entered early bought their visibility for a fraction of today's price.
Auctions are second-price, weighted by relevance. The fewer advertisers on your niche, the lower the winning bid. OpenAI recommends starting between $3 and $5 USD per click, a level that won't last.
A new network means a year of learning: which context hints work, which headlines convert, which conversations bring customers. Those who arrive two years later buy that knowledge at full price.
On Google you buy three words. In ChatGPT, the person has already explained their context, their budget, their constraints. Your ad appears while they're comparing and about to decide, not while they're vaguely searching.
Some users have moved from search engines to ChatGPT to prepare their purchases. Those searches appear nowhere in your Google Ads reports. That's demand you can't currently see.
Users can turn ads off, but OpenAI then limits their daily free messages. In practice, most Free users keep the ad-supported experience, because the alternative costs them messages.
The format
Ads appear below ChatGPT's answer, clearly labelled as sponsored and visually separated from the response. They don't influence what ChatGPT says: the two systems are distinct.
Each ad includes the advertiser name, your logo, a headline, description text, an image and the landing page.
The user immediately sees that it's a paid placement.
No advertiser can steer, rank or modify what ChatGPT responds.
No advertising near conversations about health, mental health or politics.
What we do for you
It's a new tool, with its own auction logic, context hints and compliance rules. You have a business to run.
We identify the conversations where your offer is relevant, define your objective. reach or clicks. and set a realistic starting budget with a projected cost per customer.
Opening the advertiser account, structuring campaigns and ad groups, and defining the context hints that steer how ads are matched.
Headlines, descriptions and visuals designed for this specific format. An ad that works on Google doesn't work here: the reading context isn't the same.
Setting up conversion tracking and UTM parameters, so ChatGPT traffic shows up in your existing analytics rather than in a “direct” bucket.
Adjusting bids, context hints and creative based on results. A monthly report written to be understood.
Compared to what you already run
| Google Ads | ChatGPT advertising | |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | Keywords | A conversation context |
| When it appears | During the search | During comparison and decision |
| Competition level | Saturated, high bids | Low, network just opening |
| What you know about the customer | Their query | Their context, constraints and budget |
| Platform maturity | Twenty years of optimization | First months, everything to learn |
The right move isn't to shift your budget, it's to set aside a small share to hold ground while it's still affordable.
In the media
On February 10, 2026, La Presse carried an Agence France-Presse dispatch: “ChatGPT, the most widely used AI chatbot in the world, began testing advertising on Monday.” The article notes that only a fraction of OpenAI's billion users subscribe, which explains the pressure to open an advertising revenue stream.

The test began in the United States on February 9, 2026 and OpenAI is expanding country by country. Availability for Canadian advertisers can therefore change week to week. We check for you before any agreement, and if it isn't open for your market yet, we prepare you for the opening rather than billing you for a campaign that can't run.
Two amounts to separate. The ad budget goes directly to OpenAI: you pay per thousand impressions or per click, with a bid you set. OpenAI recommends starting between $3 and $5 USD per click. Our management fee is on top of that and depends on the scope. We give you both figures before you commit.
Users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts display no advertising, and OpenAI doesn't show ads to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18. Temporary chats don't display them either.
No, and that's important to understand. Ads are served by a system separate from the conversation model. An advertiser cannot steer, rank or modify responses. If you want to be mentioned in the answers themselves, that isn't advertising, it's GEO. and that's our digital visibility offer.
Through context hints defined at the ad group level: you describe the conversations, topics or needs your offer is relevant to. These aren't exact-match keywords and they guarantee no specific placement. It's a different logic from Google, and that's precisely where early experience pays.
Yes. The Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average cost per click, average CPM and conversions. We also set UTM parameters on your landing pages so the traffic shows up in your existing analytics.
Nobody sees the conversations, including you. OpenAI doesn't share exchanges with advertisers and doesn't sell user data. You receive only aggregated, non-identifying reports: views, clicks, conversions.
Most are. Regulated sectors such as healthcare and financial services may be admitted under strict conditions. Political advertising isn't allowed, and no ad appears near sensitive conversations. We validate your case before starting.
You can absolutely do it yourself, the tool is accessible. The question is what the learning will cost: on a new network, the first weeks of trial and error are paid in budget spent without results. We've already done that learning, and we redo it every week across our clients.
No. The two capture different moments: Google takes the search, ChatGPT takes the comparison and the decision. What we recommend is setting aside a modest share of your budget to hold ground while competition is low, without touching what already works.
We call you back within 24 hours to check availability in your market, assess whether your offer fits, and give you a realistic starting budget. No commitment.
